Iran Photo (Inside & Outside)
Badguir Association
April 23 to May 7, 2019
Gallery - Cité Internationale des Arts
For the second edition of Iran Photo, the BADGUIR Association presents a selection of photographic series by young Iranian artists working both inside and outside the country. Iran Photo (Inside & Outside) offers a nuanced perspective on Iran, revealing the complex changes the country has undergone over the past four decades—changes that sometimes diverge from traditional values and widely held stereotypes.
Like other countries, but within a different national and international context, Iranian society is evolving and presenting multiple facets, as evidenced by, among other things, the increased influence of women and unprecedented urban growth. The combination of these factors, among others, has contributed to the creation of artistic and cultural networks.
Photography has been a dominant form of expression in narrating these changes. Today, a new generation of photographers, most of whom were born after 1979, is emerging in Iran. All the photographers featured in this exhibition are under forty. They belong to a representative generation that testifies to the evolution of photographic practice in their country. Their work reflects an artistic approach akin to social documentation, producing images distinct from photojournalism. Through the twenty series on display, Iran Photo offers a vision of a society in flux, like virtually any other place in the world today—with its pride, its individualities, and its questions.
As part of the exhibition, a book signing for Maryam Zandi's *The Revolution of Iran 79*, published by Nazar Editions, will be held on May 3.
Also to be discovered throughout the duration of Iran Photo (inside & outside): books on photography from Nazar Editions, the Iran collection from the publisher L'Harmattan, and the book *Revolutionaries* by Iranian photographer Kaveh Kazemi.
Exhibition organized by Zahra Jahan-Bakhsh, Curator - Guy Devinoy, Artistic Director - Lillian Davies, Director of Communications.
